Opalka, also known as Polish Torpedo, is a Polish heirloom tomato that was brought to Amsterdam, New York, in the early 1900s by the Opalka family. An Opalka daughter married a man by the name of Carl Swidorski. Swidorski would be the coworker of tomato aficionado Carolyn Male. Male introduced the variety to the Seed Savers Exchange in the 1990s and listed it as one of the 100 tomatoes featured in her book, "100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden".
Opalka has beautiful red fruits that are long and somewhat carrot to torpedo shaped on vines that are vigorous! One of the best paste type tomatoes I have ever grown. It has excellent sweet flavor and is fairly productive. Lacy, regular leaves; indeterminate. About 80-90 days to maturity after transplanting.
We recommend growing Opalka tomatoes in full sun. They do not require a pollinator in order to produce fruit. Planting and care instructions are included with each purchase.
